The format
A cigarette burns tobacco leaf and you inhale the smoke. A vape heats a liquid and you inhale the aerosol. A nicotine pouch is neither — it is a small white pouch of plant fibre, nicotine, flavour and sweetener that sits between your upper lip and gum. Nothing is burned, nothing is inhaled, and nothing is spat out.
OVNS pouches contain no tobacco leaf. This is what "tobacco-free nicotine pouch" means, and it is also what separates a pouch from traditional snus, which is made with tobacco.
How the nicotine reaches you
With smoking and vaping, nicotine is absorbed through the lungs and reaches the bloodstream quickly. With a pouch it is absorbed through the lining of the mouth, which is a slower and steadier process. That is why a pouch is left in for twenty to thirty minutes rather than used in short bursts, and why the onset feels gentler and more gradual.
It is also why pouch strengths do not map neatly onto cigarette or vape equivalents. There is no reliable conversion between "a pack a day" and a milligram figure on a tin.
Worth being clear about: OVNS pouches are a nicotine product and nicotine is addictive. They are not a smoking cessation aid and have not been evaluated as one. If you are trying to stop using nicotine, speak to a healthcare professional about options proven for that purpose.
Where you can use one
This is the practical difference most people notice first. A pouch produces no smoke, no vapour and no smell, and it is not visible once it is in place. There is nothing to exhale, so there is no second-hand output.
That said, rules vary. Many workplaces, airlines and venues have their own policies covering all nicotine products, not just the ones that produce smoke. Check rather than assume.
The hardware question
A vape needs charging, refilling, coil changes and eventually replacing. A pouch needs none of that. A can of twenty goes in a pocket and the lid doubles as the disposal compartment for used pouches. For people who find the maintenance side of vaping tedious, this is usually the appeal.
What is the same
All three deliver nicotine, and nicotine is addictive regardless of how it reaches you. Dependence, tolerance and withdrawal apply to pouches as much as to anything else. None of these products are for anyone under 21, for people who do not already use nicotine, or for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
If you want to try a pouch
Start at the lowest strength — 6 mg in the OVNS range — and give it twenty minutes before judging it. Our beginner's guide covers the first can in more detail, and how to use a pouch covers the mechanics.
